To Lighten The Mood: Dump Cake!

Enough with the heavy topics for awhile, let’s do some baking!

Ethan loves to help in the kitchen, and I feel this is one of my little contributions to the world: raise a boy who can cook for himself and doesn’t have crazy gendered ideas about the kitchen.

Today’s recipe comes from this book:

It is called “Dump Cake;” and no, not that kind of “dump.” It’s called Dump Cake because even a small child can dump the stuff in the pan. So here we go…

First, the pineapple (because everything we do has to have a fruit or vegetable!!)

Next, a can of cherry pie filling- we are using the no-sugar added kind.

And then, don’t call the Health Department, but the cherries looked too yummy to not have a wee taste…

After a little lick, he decided it was “yummy tummy” and that he wanted to do the next job too.  Sprinkle one box of yellow cake mix over the top.

And then, while Mommy isn’t looking, stick your whole hand in the pan. While Mema, taking photos, watches and laughs.  Then Ethan put a few pats of sliced butter on the top, while smooshing with his hands…

Look! Messy hands, but we are all done and ready to put in the oven for 45 minutes on 350 degrees! And then…..

Here it is! Ethan’s Dump Cake! It tasted very yummy indeed, and we have frozen the squares to keep it longer (and to keep Mommy from eating the whole thing!)

Things I love: justice in all forms; flowers; locally grown food; cloth-diapering; breastfeeding; feminist theory; outdoor play; beaches; wine; Divine interventions; 4-H and coffee. Things I loathe: racism; homophobia; toxic crap; misogyny; litterbugs; the zombie apocalypse and pitbull-haters. My formal education is in sociology, gender studies, and public policy. I'm also a Lactation Educator; 4-H Youth Development coordinator a Certified Master Gardener and a graduate of a Permaculture Design Course. I've been blogging for several years on dozens of topics- everything from women's health to breed-specific legislation. But the thing I like to write about most is my gardening, food adventures and my kids. So there you have it. Please be kind. Thanks.
