On Life & Lemons

It happens without us knowing,

So gradual.

The mess of the lemon tree.

It needs pruning

Picking.

Care.

Who has the time?

For the clearing out

Boxing up,

Sorting excess from need.

To do it means to

Get cuts,

Pokes.

Climb up inside

Tangling myself

This tree is cluttered with itself

Like I am.

Too many branches and thoughts

Plucking out this and that

Opening small wounds.

Quiet meditations.

But look!

The Light

Shines through

Can feel air now.

BREATHE.

I worry I’ve cut too much

But like mess in life

It always grows back.

Things I love: justice in all forms; flowers; locally grown food; cloth-diapering; breastfeeding; feminist theory; outdoor play; beaches; wine; Divine interventions; 4-H and coffee. Things I loathe: racism; homophobia; toxic crap; misogyny; litterbugs; the zombie apocalypse and pitbull-haters. My formal education is in sociology, gender studies, and public policy. I'm also a Lactation Educator; 4-H Youth Development coordinator a Certified Master Gardener and a graduate of a Permaculture Design Course. I've been blogging for several years on dozens of topics- everything from women's health to breed-specific legislation. But the thing I like to write about most is my gardening, food adventures and my kids. So there you have it. Please be kind. Thanks.

  1. is this the proverbial phrase expansion on “life handing you lemons, make lemonade, lemon bars, lemon merengue, lemon honey dressing, and lemon chicken.” oh, this sounds soooo good. this midwesterner is so jealous! i cannot grow lemon trees. 😥

  2. LOVE LOVE LOVE this poetry!

  3. Beautiful. You are a very talented writer. I really like your new blog. It’s as if it has tapped into something in you. I like how you have used the theme of the garden to discuss not only your garden, many other aspects of life that us non-gardeners recognize too.
